Matthew Cooper has over 35 years of international luxury hotel and restaurant experience and is currently the General Manager of the Kimpton Qiantan Shanghai. Matthew began his career in Australia and has spent the past 21 years living and working in various Asian countries, including India, South Korea, Japan, and China. For the last five years, Matthew has focused on leading some of China's most renowned hotels, including the Shanghai EDITION, the PuXuan Beijing, Intercontinental Dishui Lake, and his current position at Kimpton Qiantan Shanghai.
As a father to two successful young women studying medical sciences, Matthew has a personal understanding of the challenges young women face economically, socially, and in terms of equity. This perspective has informed his professional approach, allowing him to view these issues through the dual lenses of a leader and a parent. Matthew takes pride in his creativity and in his commitment to supporting and advocating for female leadership. Matthew's current executive team at Kimpton Qiantan Shanghai is composed of 70% female talent.
Matthew has actively participated in mentoring "females in leadership" programs in his current role and across his previous four positions. Presently, he mentors six women aspiring to become General Managers. While in India, Matthew and his family were key contributors to the "Save the Girl Child" movement, where they engaged in fundraising, development, and the promotion of this critical program.
